It Never Hurts to be Prepared! Being prepared for major emergencies is something new to the UK!

In all the recent talk about emergency preparedness, little has been said about the food supply chain.  The food supply chain can break down in only a couple of days. In major emergencies, bread and water are among the first items to go. If there is a breakdown in the food supply chain, you can easily be prepared to feed your family until the food supply is restored. Here is what you will need.

You need a supply of unprocessed food that can be stored for long periods of time such as wheat grain, honey and salt. Always have two bulk size containers of olive oil on hand. When one is gone, replace it and use the one you already have stored (this is called rotating your stock).

You need to be prepared for the loss of electrical power.  This may or may not be necessary depending on the emergency.  Apart from buying a small generator, the easiest thing to do is to buy a hand mill to grind your wheat or a flaker to roll oats or wheat which can be eaten in several forms such as meusli.

The easiest way to ensure you have a disaster food supply is to purchase a camping stove that uses LP or another form of fuel.  You can use a small griddle to make pancakes and flat breads.

The other ingredient you will need for emergency preparedness is clean water.  You should always have a supply of bottled water for your family.  How much you need depends upon how long you would like to protect your family.
