News & BLOG

In this section, we hope to bring you links, commentary, and a BLOG. We will provide links to current news that impacts your health as it relates to grain and healthy living.  We also hope to provide some commentary on various current issues.  Finally, we want to begin keeping a BLOG for those that would like to keep up with home milling in the UK.

22 July - After years of controversy over oats for the coeliac, a major celiac website (celiac.com) has recently added pure oats to their safe list for coeliacs.

20 July - We have started wholesaling to various farm shops, hotels, and pubs in the area.  The response has been very encouraging. We are working hard to keep up with the demand without compromising the quality.

10 July - We found a source for whole grain yellow maize. We have tried several of our traditional recipes and it works great. We will soon have corn grain and corn bread mixes ready. Corn is naturally gluten free!

29 March - Glasgow was a great success. We sold out of almost everything we took. The granolas, bread mixes and muesli were a big hit. The Vario mill was the best selling mill.

16 March - We are preparing for Glasgow. We are looking forward to our first event in Scotland. Come visit us if you live in the area.

12 March - We just completed our first Farmer’s Market in St. Albans. Those in North London may now visit us for granolas, bread mixes, muesli, or buckets of grain. We can also arrange for delivery of mills while we are in the area. The market was very busy and sales were brisk. We got to talk with a lot of people that need the goodness of whole fresh milled grains.

21 October - This week a dear lady came to our Farmer’s Market stand to purchase 10 large bags of fresh flaked porridge oats. She was a regular customer, but had never purchased that many before. We asked her what she was going to do with so many oats. She said that her daughter had some serious digestive problems and was very ill. But her daughter had discovered that she could eat as much of the fresh oats as she desired with no reactions.

4 October - We are always encouraged to get e-mails like this one:  Dear David, After having the coeliac condition for 15 years and being unable to tolerate commercial porridge oats I was extremely apprehensive about trying your milled oats. However, having eaten them every day for breakfast for the past three months not only have I tolerated them extremely well but I can already feel their benefits. Many, many thanks for all your advice and help.

7 June - Grand Design Live at Excel in London was great fun! We brought our entire range of baked goods to sell along with our mills.  We did very well in both categories.  It is so much fun to see people tasting fresh grains and oats for the first time!

3 May - The Grand Opening of the new Yockenthwaite Farm Bakery at the Leyburn Food & Drink Festival was a huge success.  We sold over 700 hundred bags of various fresh milled cereals.  For the first time at any fair, we sold more of our top-of-the-lineVario mills than our smaller Pico mills.  The people in North Yorkshire have responded favorably to the flavour and nutrition of fresh milled grains!

2 May - The Grand Opening of the Imbham Farm Granary in Haslemere near London was a great success.  They sold out all of their fresh milled grain products at the fair. People are discovering that fresh milled is not only more nutritious, but tastes great!

6 December - Our Nutty Granola continues to be a big hit.  We are beginning limited production this week.  Each time we have offered it at fairs over the last few weeks, it has sold out quickly.  We will restock Granola on Friday of this week at Hampton Court Palace and try out a new Granola made with premium Spelt and premium Groats and no nuts.  So many people are intolerant to standard wheat and nuts, we wanted to offer something delicious for these special people!

1 November - For our Christmas Fairs in November and December, we will be offering a special Gift Basket for the Campo Flaker. We have found a beautiful basket that is just the right size for the Campo Flaker, a beautiful matching wooden bowl that just fits under the spout for the fresh rolled oats, a bag of oat groats to get started, and some recipes. This will be wrapped up in clear cellophane with golden bows. People have been saying all year that the Campo will make a great Christmas present. We can’t wait to present it at the Country Living Fair November 9-13.

15 August - Research continues to support the role of whole grains and diet in warding off cancer.  Whole grains play a role in prevention and treatment of prostate cancer in men.  Click here to see full article.

13 July - We are test marketing some Gluten Free Bread Mixes. For people who have been clinically diagnosed with coeliac disease, gluten free breads are generally pretty bland and heavy.  The mix we are testing is one of the best we have found, yet it is fairly expensive as most gluten free mixes are.  We hope that numerous people who need gluten free products will try this mix and return the evaluation questionnaire.

13 July - We are planning a lot of fairs for this autumn. Our next fair will be the Town & Country Fair at Stoneleigh for August Bank Holiday. Come visit us if you are in the Birmingham area.

3 July - The Daily Telegraph House & Garden Fair was down in overall attendance, but we had a very good response. Many people were educated about the importance of fresh milled grains. We sold a good number of machines and have had a good follow-up response on internet sales.  Many people indicated that they were going to put a new mill into their budget or plan to get on for this Christmas!

25 June - The Yockenthwaite Farm Open Day was great fun.  We were able to meet lots of neighbours. We also were able to educate numerous people about fresh grains and even sold a few mills.

23 June - This Sunday, June 25, we will be at our neighbours for Yockenthwaite Farm Open Day. We will be demonstrating fresh ground grains and providing samples. There will also be sheep shearing, caving, sheep dog demonstrations, lamb on the grill, and much more.  It promises to be a great day in the Yorkshire Dales.

22 June - Great news for wheat allergy sufferers. We have finally found premium spelt grain. Many wheat allergy sufferers are able to eat bread baked with spelt grain.  Spelt flour is available in the UK, but until now, the full nutrition and flavour of fresh ground whole grain spelt has not been available.  Our supplier has finally found top quality spelt grain from Europe.  It is now in our warehouse and available for ordering.

17 May - If you are planning a walk on the Dales Way this mid-July to mid-August, drop in for a free cup of tea and a sample of fresh ground grains.  We will place a sign outside the door when guests are welcome which will usually be mid-day. We will provide more details when the time approaches. We would love to see you!

1 May - Great News! A new study links good carbs to healthier hearts.  We have been saying it all along and the research is starting to come in!  Refined grains are BAD CARBS and whole grains (fresh is the best) are GOOD CARBS. According to this new article, bad carbs add weight and cause many illnesses such as on-set diabetes and heart disease.  This article from MSNBC.com is based upon a new Harvard study. “Bad carbs like white bread or refined pastas were linked with increased blood inflammation, which could lead to heart disease later on, Levitan says.” They also say that you should eat soluble bran like oat bran. 29 April - We have just agreed to participate in the Town & Country Festival 05 at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire on August Bank Holiday 27th and 29th August.  This will be our second fair for this summer.  We have have been invited to several more which we are now considering. We can’t attend them all, but would love to do so. For those in the midlands, come visit us and see a demonstration and taste a sample at the Town & Country Festival.

21 April - On the Atkins diet? Love quick and easy processed meat?  Check out this from Reuters: ‘researchers found that heavy consumers of processed meats -- 40 grams a day or more -- were 67 percent more likely to develop cancer of the pancreas than study participants with the lowest intake.’ Click here for a link to the article.

19 April - In our article on health, we conclude that healthy living includes a balance in our emotional life, our environment (exercise and limiting our exposures to toxins), and balanced fresh nutrition like fresh ground whole grains provide. Check out this BBC article that claims that happy people are healthy people!

18 April - In a totally unscientific experiment, we put out some ‘couple of days old’ fresh ground wheat bread in a bird feeder designed for slices of bread. In a similar bird feeder, we put a slice of store bought whole wheat bread. The birds flocked to the fresh ground bread and left the other alone until the fresh ground was gone.  In such an experiment, you can only observe that on this day and among these birds at this specific location, the birds preferred the fresh ground. I wish I could conclude that the birds could tell the difference between the nutrition in fresh ground wheat bread, but I don’t know if birds can do that.  I don’t even know that the birds preferred the taste of the fresh ground since I can’t speak a single dialect of bird.  But at least we know that our birds prefer our bread!

14 April - Yesterday, Grains2mill was approved for a stall at the Daily Telegraph / House & Garden Fair at Olympia in London on June 30-July 3.  We met a representative from the Daily Telegraph at the Country Living Magazine Fair April 16-20. They were very interested in what we were doing. They asked if we would be interested in having a representative  at their fair in June.  Fresh ground wheat and fresh flaked oats were something they had never seen before.  We have been placed directly across from the Celebrity Chef Kitchen at the fair.

‘Whole grain means that the bran and germ have not been removed from the kernel. Refining removes these components along with a lot of nutrients and, of course, the fiber. Fiber helps in weight management, the control of diabetes, and contributes to a healthy digestive tract. The antioxidants and phytochemicals that are removed help to fight cancer and heart disease.’
