Grain Mill Reviews
Since we were the first to bring grain mills to the UK, we had our
choice of any grain mill we wanted to import. We discovered that the
best quality grain mills in the world are also a great value for the
money. Although there are many grain mills on the market on the
continent and in North America, and several of them asked us to import
their mills, we chose Schnitzer grain mills and are the exclusive
importers of Schnitzer in the UK. If anyone not connected with us claims
they can sell you a Schnitzer mill, it is a bait and switch scam
to try and sell you something else (more details at the bottom of the
page). Schnitzer is the original home grain mill and still the best. We
originally imported a very good quality plastic and metal burr mill from
the USA, but for reasons that will be explained below, we decided to
stop importing these mills.
Schnitzer grain mills represent the
finest German craftsmanship and engineering that combine quality and
affordability. You can spend more and get a lot less. We will review
several aspects of why we recommend and sell only Schnitzer grain mills.
Schnitzer quality.
This can first be seen in the fine craftsmanship of the cabinet.
Schnitzer grain mills have beautiful natural beech or lime wood cabinets
that are solid wood. There are more expensive units from the continent
that use veneer rather than solid wood. Solid wood means that the unit
will last longer. You can also see the quality in the choice of the
milling mechanism. The mill is composed of real basalt stone in a
composite that provides a self sharpening, self cleaning stone mill that
will last for decades. Other stones may need replacing, but not
Schnitzer. We have personally used USA plastic and metal mills for years
and were delighted to have them. Their flour is far superior to
anything you can purchase in a store. But plastic wears out, parts
break, and we believe the flour is inferior to stone grain milling.
Schnitzer Value. The first aspect of value is that the Schnitzer grain mills are built to last. They are well constructed, have a 2-year guarantee, and are basically problem free. The combination of quality and affordability make Schnitzer an excellent choice. Each machine is hand crafted and built to last.
Ease of Use. The Schnitzer grain mills are self cleaning and require little maintenance. The USA mills (we have used them and imported them in the past) usually mill the flour into a plastic storage container that is a part of the mill. These storage containers require constant maintenance and cleaning. The metal burr mills are often extremely loud to operate and require plastic sponge filters to keep the flour from spreading all over your kitchen. These filters require constant maintenance. The Schnitzer grain mill grinds the flour gently into whatever container you use for your cooking.
Low Heat and Noise. The slower the rotation of the milling stones, the less heat generated. The more heat, the more nutritional loss through the milling process. All home mills are loud, but some metal burr mills are so loud that you need ear plugs to prevent damage to your hearing.
Stone Milling. Only stone grain milling allows you to adjust the coarseness of the grain from fine to very coarse. Stone grain mills also shred the grain rather than milling it into fine microparticles. This increases the time it takes your body to digest the grain (this is refered to as the glycemic index) which allows your body to digest more of the precious nutrients in the grain. Our family's first home mill was not a stone mill. When we first started importing both metal burr and stone mills, we gave demonstrations at major UK fairs since people in the UK were not aware of home flour milling. When people had the opportunity of seeing for themselves the difference between stone mills and metal burr mills, people always chose the stone mills. Several years ago, we decided to stop importing the USA plastic and metal burr mills.
We have done the research for you and have discovered the best mills on the market for differing needs of different consumers. We have chosen to stock 6 different mills. We have exclusive rights to sell Schnitzer Mills in the UK.

Bait and Switch Scam: There is a website in the UK that will tell you they can sell you a Schnitzer at a low price, but they can't. They will tell you Schnitzer is lower quality and thus a cheaper price, but try to get you to buy another brand that they claim to be superior. Don't be fooled. They do this with Schnitzer because where ever Schnitzer is known, it has a reputation as the finest home mill.
