Arthritis

There are many types of arthritis, but Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis are most helped by a change in diet. Recent research indicates that both symptoms and level of disability can be influenced by your diet. We refer you to links to some of this research at the bottom of this page.

Whole Foods we recommend:

Eat more:

  • Extra virgin olive oil (cold pressed extra virgin olive oil is expensive, but works best)
  •  Cold water fish such as salmon, tuna, herring, mackerel and halibut
  • Organically grown fruits and vegetables (especially citrus, blueberries, cranberries, apples, leafy greens, broccoli, avocado, papaya, grapes)
  • Nuts and seeds (almonds, peanuts)
  • Whole grains (fresh stone milled or sprouted, whole porridge oats)
  • Ginger and garlic
  • Green Tea

Avoid

Avoid highly refined products such as white rice, white bread and white pasta, refined sugars, excessive saturated fats and foods which contain trans fats. There is some research that indicates that wheat gluten can have a negative impact on r
heumatoid arthritis.

Our Number 3 for arthritis!

Supreme Raw Naked Oats

Most oat grain is not sproutable. These are raw sproutable oats that are available as standard and premium varieties. The premium naked oats were grown with a greater sensitivity to the environment, but all of our naked oats are grown for us with the utmost care for the environment and for your health.

Rinse before soaking about 6-8 hours. Oats may now be eaten after soaking, but may also be sprouted. To sprout, then place in a sprouter after soaking and rinsing. Rinse and drain every 12 hours. The percentage of grains that sprout will be determined by a variety of factors, but they will all be very good and nutritious. There is some husk in this variety. If this is a concern for you, when you soak them, most husked oats will float to the surface and can be spooned out.

Our Number 4 for arthritis!

Porridge / Muesli Oats

We offer flaked porridge oats that are flaked fresh and then packed in a controlled atmosphere. These oats are unprocessed and should be refrigerated after opening. They are best if used within 8 weeks of opening the package. These oats have much more flavour and nutrition than what you buy at the store. You can eat these raw or make a wonderful muesli with them. Also great for oat baths for the ladies. Just 1/2 cup in a nylon or mesh. Run hot bath or basin water through it and watch the oat milk and oils come through! Cleanses and heals your insides or skin! Comes in 500g or 1kg packets.

These are our top 4 recommendations. All of the products below are consistent with generally accepted guidelines for helping arthritis!

Sprouts (Barley, Rye, Quinoa and/or Buckwheat)

Low gluten or naturally gluten free whole grain sprouts are great for arthritis. Easy to sprout. Rye and buckwheat naturally controls blood sugar levels and makes a great snack or garnish on almost anything. The buckwheat also naturally controls blood sugar levels. The buckwheat sprouts in only 2 days or you can just soak it overnight and it is ready. Barley is the best whole grain and easily sprouts. Also good for cooking. Comes in 450g bags.

Corn Bread Mix  Naturally gluten-free (Yellow maize, gluten-free baking powder, sea salt)

This wonderful whole grain bread mix is naturally gluten free. Popular in the American South and Southwest (and much of the world), fresh milled maize has a wonderful texture and is full of flavour and nutrition. Easy to make with no kneading or rising time. Comes in 2 packets to cook fresh twice. Best cooked in an 8" iron skillet, muffin tin or square oven-proof dish and eaten fresh out of the oven with butter. Great with soup, salad or a hot meal. A great nutritious whole grain bread alternative for coeliacs.  Milled and packaged in a separate gluten free room.

Ancient Spelt Bread Mix Wheat free (Spelt, yeast, sea salt: you add honey, olive oil, egg & water)

The same recipe as The Lord's Bread (Ezekiel 16:19). An ancient recipe with an ancient grain. Many tell us this is the best wheat free bread they have ever tasted. In only a month, it has already become our best seller. The bread is less sweet than the Lord’s Bread and a little lighter, but not as creamy. It rises very high in a bread machine as long as you use the basic rapid (about 2 hours) cycle. Instructions for baking by hand are given or it works well in most bread machines on basic, rapid rise, light crust settings.

Spelt & Sunflower Mix   Wheat & Yeast Free (Spelt, oats, sunflower seed, baking powder, brown sugar, sea salt)

This recipe (from our own Imbhams Farm Granary) is an easy to make wheat and yeast free recipe that produces a small granary type loaf with medium density, very creamy and full of flavour. Many people bake this bread and freeze it. Then you can cut off each piece one at a time. It goes a long way.

Spelt Challah Bread Mix  Wheat free (Spelt, yeast, sea salt: add honey, olive oil egg & water)

This wheat-free recipe is based upon The Ancient Bread Mix. Challah is a braided bread that you break off the loaf with your hands. Best eaten fresh out of the cooker with butter. Instructions for baking by hand and diagrams for braiding are on the label. For bread machines, use the dough cycle, then remove the dough, make the braids, let rise and then bake. It produces a slightly sweet loaf that is very light with a unique creamy texture. Worth the effort and time!
